Bienvenido!

National Day Laborer Conference
Carlos Mares
Preparing for a day on Capital Hill
Abriendo Los Ojos, began first as a conversation with Andrew Herring the Director of Development for Street Level Volunteers for Community Wellness. Andrew began describing his experiences with a group of Day Laborers or Jornaleros in the Fruitvale District of Oakland California. He explained that the Jornaleros where attempting to organize themselves and petition local government for fair treatment and the right to work. He explained that a recent local city ordinance had made it illegal to solicit work from the street. He felt that this was a special group of men and the focus and dedication of the group where like nothing he had seen before. We believe he was correct, in our second month of production we have seen more than expected and learned more than we can tell. This site will chronicle our attempt to document what these men are struggling to accomplish.
