Project Update

September 29, 2002

On Wednesday September 25 Jeff and I flew to Washington D.C. to attend the second annual National Day Laborers Organizing Networks conference with Patricia, Felipe, Andrew and Carlos. We where invited by El Centro Legal to document the activities during the conference. Jeff and I had the opportunity to attend group meetings where we documented first hand the struggles and successes of Day Laborer groups from around the country. We where also able to participate in and document a rally on Capitol Hill and to accompany a group of delegates from California as they urged Congressional support for the Day Labor Fairness and Protection Act- H.R. 2755, the delegates included Jornaleros from Oakland, San Francisco and Mountain View. The privilege to be exposed to such a wealth of information and passion has greatly increased our understanding of the Day Laborer's struggles and has enormously expanded our access to information and expertise and has galvanized our resolve to tell this story. We are deeply grateful to Patricia and El Centro Legal for the opportunity to witness and document this event.
